The Arts at Grace concert series will offer its fifth annual Young Artists Concert on Sunday, February 6 at 3:00 PM at Grace Episcopal Church, 13 Court Street in Cortland. The concert will feature talented high school age musicians and one young professional from several area communities. There is no charge for the event. Both audience members and performers will have an opportunity to talk with each other at a reception following the program.
One of the primary goals of The Arts at Grace music series is to provide opportunities for young aspiring artists from the greater Cortland community to perform in concert. Each year well-known local musicians and teachers recommend fine young musicians to perform. The 2011 high school age musicians come from Cortland, Dryden, Groton, Homer and McGraw.
Marion Giambattista's voice students Bethany Latten, Caitlin Troy, and Hannah Teeter will sing. Soprano Hannah Teter was also recommended by Cara McLaughlin, voice teacher at Homer High School. Marina Gorelaya teaches pianists Hannah Zhang, Kelley Mulvana, David Harris, and Annie Steve. Ann Finamore's participating voice students are Kayla Holl and Julia Convertini. Groton music teacher Eric Toyama recommended soprano Jordan Twitchell. String teacher Julie Carr instructs violist Jonathan Fleischman. Dryden High School music teacher Richard Huyge nominated flutist Krysten Geddes. The repertoire ranges from the classic music of Bach and Mozart to more modern works by Paul Hindemith and Leonard Bernstein.
Violist Dana Huyge will play Paul Hindemith's Sonata (Op. 11, No. 4). Just a few years ago, he was an aspiring high school age musician from Homer. Now Huyge is an active performer as violist, violinist, and singer with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. He also makes chamber music and solo appearances throughout Central New York. Huyge holds a degree in music from the University of Michigan and will receive his master's degree from the Eastman School of Music in the spring of 2011.
The accompanist for the Young Artists Concert will be William Cowdery who is musical director and organist of the First Congregational Church in Ithaca. Dr. Cowdery is passionate about the music of Bach and often participates in Bach festivals in the northeast. He is an adjunct instructor at Cornell University. Cowdery is well-known throughout Central New York as performer, accompanist, musicologist, and theorist.
The Arts at Grace is a community outreach effort of Grace Episcopal/Holy Spirit Lutheran Church assisted by the Wilkins Foundation, individuals and businesses from the greater Cortland community. The series has received assistance from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Grants. Admission to all Arts at Grace events is free, but voluntary donations are welcome.
